Tight Lines – 25th July
July 25, 2024

Welcome to this week’s edition of Tight Lines

A wintery week in the Peel region with anglers grabbing the smallest of weather windows to get amongst them.

Those keen anglers with pots in the water are doing well with local red Crays. This time of year, the dirty water means the crays are more active out and about under the cover of the poor visibility.

While the weather can be a challenge there is no need to pull your pots every day. Bait them up nice and heavy with longer lasting fish heads like Orange Roughie or Hoki.  It’s also wise to drop your pots on ground that’s not so rugged. Look for a good hard bottom with cracks and smaller ledges, not rugged ground full of deep caves, where you risk your pots getting stuck after winter swell events.

We are still seeing Snapper and Dhu fish offshore. Remember this part of our demersal season closes at midnight next Wednesday the 31st of July.

Anglers heading up our local rivers keeping out of the wind and offshore swell have been enjoying some good Black Bream fishing. You’re also given a chance of mixing it with plenty of soapy Mulloway that hold up in both our Serpentine and Murray river systems.

The Fresh water scene is also having some encouraging results for early in the season with some nice Rainbow trout being caught in our local dams. It’s often the streams leading into the dams that we see most of the winter activity with the moving water keeping the trout active. Seeing some nice sized Rainbows active in the dams is super encouraging for the spring ahead where we traditionally see the height of activity for the seasonal fishery.

Wherever you get the chance to wet a line this weekend as always, good luck tight lines, and remember every day’s a good day for fishing.
