Tight Lines – 12 December, 2024
December 12, 2024

Welcome To This Week’s Edition of Tight Lines

Summer is finally here and it’s fair to say this is probably everyone’s favourite time of the year, and rightfully so! The options are endless as new seasons and fisheries open allowing us to take full advantage of time spent on or around the water.

Crays are in full swing and in particular those setting pots north of town are seeing a great run of whites in close and out to the five-fathom bank. The crays south of town seem to be a bit slower but we can say for certain that divers are reporting massive numbers stacked on the inshore reefs, ready for their turn to walk.

The first run for abalone season commences 14th Dec for one hour from 7 – 8 am and the long awaited Demersal season opens starting the 16th of December.

Offshore, we have seen the first bit of FADs action with a few dolphin Fish being taken from the nearby Rockingham Fads and plenty of small tuna are being seen on the way out along the 30 – 40m line while samson fish and yellowtail kings are always a chance on the artificial reefs or on prominent lumps out a bit wider.

Our estuary and river systems are really on fire this week with anglers reporting awesome surface lure action with yellowfin whiting, juvenile salmon, tailor and herring all active on the bait within the system. Anglers on the rock walls and groins will often have fish right at their feet as the predators heard the bait up against the rocks or shallows

Night time has been the best time to be targeting a squid or two under the lights of the Dawesville bridge, and those walking the shallows under torchlight are being rewarded with good catches of local prawns.

Finally, the crabbing season has also opened up and while their numbers aren’t strong just yet, it shouldn’t be long before there are plenty of blues to be found either with a drop net or while scooping the shallows. One trick to maximise your harvest is to check any sized crab for fullness before deciding to harvest. An older ‘orange bottom’ shell or a shell that is very firm on the underside is a sure sign that it’s worth putting in the pot.

Wherever you get the chance to wet a line this weekend as always, good luck tight lines, and remember every day’s a good day for fishing.
