Tight Lines – 20 March, 2025.
March 20, 2025

Welcome To This Week’s Edition Of Tight Lines!

If you looked at the amount of boats heading out of the local boat ramps fitted with outriggers or suspiciously larger than usual lures rigged on game rods, you may be wondering if you’re still in Mandurah! The local fishing scene is far more akin to northern expeditions with a lot of boats heading out in pursuit of Billfish or hard running pelagics such as Mackerel and Wahoo! Well that’s just the scene here at the moment and this week we showcase just how good the fishing can be when currents and water temps deliver crystal blue waters to our shore.

This weeks winner Josh on the rod with Ed Bradfield on the leader, taming a Rockingham Fads Striped Marlin

Firstly Marlin! There’s been plenty hooked. There was even one sighted on the 5 Fathom bank last week!

Let me recall a story from one of the local lads I heard this morning. ‘Kade and the boys had a cracking session on the Dolphin Fish this week, spearing a few on the fads and also trolling a few up at another location. Upon making another pass on the fads a larger than usual fish crashed past the large skirted lure out the back of the spread only to miss and hit the one diving minnow they had in the water. Long story short, blistering run, massive aerial display, very big fish.. Threw the hooks!’ Ya just never know when the big boy may latch on..

Ed Bradfield however managed to stay connected to his fish, landing this marvellous striped Marlin during pristine conditions. They were able to lead this fish at the boat and take a great snap before release. Well done lads.

Ed Bradfield – leading a Marlin

Luke and the crew had similar ideas in mind, hitting the fads and managing multiple hookups on Dolphin fish either cast or trolled, they just couldn’t miss! The real line burning started though when they bumped into some awesome Wahoo action amidst the chaos and managed to put some real beauties in the boat. While not rare they certainly don’t come about too often and are a prized catch at this time of year. When the water is bubbling with bait and pelagics and you just don’t know what’s going to happen next, that’s what we all dream of.

There’s a lot of stories we have heard from other locals, the pelagic scene is really firing in our waters. Choosing the right spread is certainly part of the equation but more importantly is finding the right water!

Did you know that when you visit Tackle World Miami we will not only assist with ideas on your spread and lures but we also have access to the latest Rip Charts maps showing currents, temps, clarity and altimetry just to name a few and will walk you through putting it all together to find the fish.

Now pulling away from the crazy pelagic action, for those with a slower pace of fishing in mind there’s still plenty to be caught along our inshore water ways, nearshore weed banks and canal systems.

Just check out the absolute slob of a Bream that Luke pulled on light tackle from a local marina. Shane has been getting into some jumbo Crayfish, the latest reports suggest they are in good numbers inshore if you can find them. And lastly Tucker and Tobin Miles display one of almost a dozen massive Squid that they pulled off our nearshore weed beds, this time of year is prime time to secure a good feed of salt’n pepper Calamari!

Also don’t forget we only have 11 more days before the Demersal ban is lifted and our prized Dhufish, Snapper and Baldchin Grouper are back on the menu. Get your boat gear in check, respool your reels and rig your rods as the fishing options are just about to get a whole lot better!

Wherever you get the chance to wet a line this weekend as always, good luck tight lines, and remember every day’s a good day for fishing.
