Tight Lines – 4th April, 2025.
April 04, 2025

Welcome to this week’s edition of Tight Lines!

It’s been a real mixed bag of fishing options this week and as seasons change, bans are lifted and Autumn gets into full swing, anglers up and down the coast start to turn their attention to other fishing opportunities.

This weeks Winner Oliver Lamond displays a beautiful beach caught Mulloway that measured 85cm.

Firstly, Demersals! Yup the demersal fishing ban was lifted on Tuesday and with amazing conditions on the water, many would have taken time off to start strong on that first day. Getting to fish those prominent lumps after they’ve had a rest paid off well for those that got into them early. Plenty of Dhufish hit the deck on the 30+ meter lumps and those that headed wider into the 50s and beyond got rewarded also.

Snapper are definitely firing on the inshore reefs and there’s been some seriously good models being found out wider. Just check out the absolute cracker of a fish that Ben Edwards managed to add to his bag out session of quality pinks.

For those that pushed out a bit further to fish the fads during the amazing weather we had at the start of the week found good numbers of Dolphin Fish were on the chew! Hayden Unkovich got the lads onto plenty of good eating size Dollies during their first run out that wide.

I suppose the main fishery that has really started to fire this last week is our local Tailor and Mulloway run! It’s been amazing of late with the usual beaches that are known to produce really turning it on with proper silver slabs being pulled onto the sand.

March/April has always been a favourite for those chasing Mulloway in the suds and the run we are seeing has anglers of all ages getting stuck into the action. Just check out the ripper fish pulled in by Oliver Lamond during the week! Live baits, strip baits and even soft plastics are claiming fish for those in pursuit of these chrome slabs.

Tailor numbers kinda go hand in hand with this increase in Mulloway activity and we are seeing great numbers of choppers gathering in beach gutters and along rock groynes. Often with a meter plus Mulloway lying in wait not far behind. So, when you see good numbers of Tailor, keep in the back of your mind that a change to a larger bait or a livie may put you onto the fish of a lifetime. The bite will only get better this month so get some sand between your toes and have a crack for yourself.

Lures are getting great results on the bigger Tailor models too, have a go at the fish pulled by Jake by walking a sandy beach with rod in hand or the version Patrick managed after fishing a likely looking rock wall.

The fishing options this month are sooo broad, theres something for everyone, either with your feet on solid ground or out on the blue, its shaping up to be a cracking month!

There’s only one question left to ask since it’s the month of April.. Will we get a local Salmon run this season??!

Wherever you get the chance to wet a line this weekend as always, good luck tight lines, and remember every day’s a good day for fishing.
