Tight Lines – 31st July
July 31, 2025

Weekly Winner Sarah with her mixed bag!

A change in fishing seasons is upon us as of the 1st of August. Firstly, the gill netting season in the Peel Estuary is closed through until the first Wednesday in November, and the Demersal season by boat is closed through until the middle of September.

Remember, land-based Demersals can be caught all year round.

So, what can we explore for the next weather window?

Freshwater, we have seen good activity from trout in the streams. Good recent rain and water flow will keep the trout active.

Our rivers have active Black Bream and Mulloway. They can be tempted with baits like mulie, mullet and prawn, or lures cast close to structure.

The estuary itself has a lot of freshwater now flowing through. If you can find clearer pockets, you will still find some fish. Good-sized tailor and herring on surface, we also find larger whiting in the winter months, not so much on lure, more on bait, but with a bit of an explore they can be found.

Beaches are good to fish from as soon as the swell gives you a chance. Look for weed-free areas and keep your baits nice and fresh. The more scent, the better under low visibility.

Boating, there is good winter skippy to target on our inshore reefs and don’t be surprised to see a few winter Yellowtail Kingfish turn up in berley trails. Light, unweighted baits or micro jigs work well.

We also see tuna this time of year. No birds to give them away, but small skirts through the 30m line will often uncover a few winter speedsters.

Wherever you get the chance this week as always good luck tight lines and remember every day’s a good day for fishing.
