Weekly Winner Josh with a 53cm King George whiting
A good-looking weather window is finally upon us. It’s been wild and wet lately, severely limiting fishing options, but that’s all about to change in a hurry.
Demersal season is open and after those wild, winter-like conditions inshore, pink snapper should be active. Drop the pick and get the burley going. Light or unweighted baits and well-presented soft plastics should have you tangling with solid inshore specimens. The new moon on Monday will also help stimulate the bite.
If you’re anchoring in shallow areas, keep an eye on the swell forecast. Light winds are important, but it’s the swell that can create potentially dangerous situations.
Crays are also on the move with the dirty water. The dirtier, the better this time of year. It’s reds on structure we’re targeting while the swell is up, so aim for milder ground to help minimise stuck pots.
There are some nice King George whiting still on offer too, with good fish nudging the 50cm mark. They’re a joy to catch and even better on the plate.
Freshwater fishos should look to the hills, where flowing water will keep trout active in the smaller streams. Meanwhile, a few days of sunshine and some easterly winds will clean up the beaches. Last time we had a break in the weather, the weed cleared fast, so spots that were choked two days ago could be firing by the weekend.
Our estuary system is a bit of a waiting game, but keep a close eye on it. Once it drops out, the change will happen fast. Before we know it, tailor, squid and yellowfin whiting will be on the move, signalling the start of Light Tackle Season.
