This is the last week for our annual Marron season with this year’s four-week season closing next Thursday, the 5th of February, at 12 noon. It’s been a productive season, with good numbers and some cracking-sized marron being snared.

Local crabs are doing well with good numbers and better sizing. With the Peel, Cockburn Sound, and the Swan River all producing. Not many anglers consider tide when crabbing but in can play a key factor to how active they are. The moving water of an incoming tide brings with it food and or uncovers food with its movement. As crabs are scavengers this is the time of day they are more likely to come out from hiding in the mud or weed to simply get themselves a feed.

Before the blow, our pelagic’s were up an about with solid number of active Blue Fin Tuna and working birds through the 30’s to 50’s. A good mix of divers like the Halco max plus skirts, are the go for good success in these areas. Try not to chase down schools of fish that you see feeding; you will get better hook ups by trolling the general depth you are seeing the activity in and bringing a school of hungry tuna up to your boat and spread of lures.

The full moon is next Monday, the 2nd of February, meaning this weekend will be productive for Squid and Tailor. They are both active twilight predators and the combination of the good strong afternoon tides plus the added twilight from the full moon give them a solid platform to hunt bait. Our Rock walls, Groins, Beaches and Estuary will have heightened activity. As the sunsets darker lures will be more successful Gold based lures for Tailor and deep red or purple based squid jigs for the squid.
