Black bream caught using Daiwa Bait Junkie soft plastic lure in Mandurah waters

Black Bream caught on a Daiwa Bait junkie Minnow in Bloodworm colour

Welcome to this week’s edition of Tight Lines.

It’s our Mother’s Day edition of Tight Lines. Why not grab mum and spoil her with a day on the water this Sunday.

The slightly cooler clean water is good for squid and King George whiting. Squid can move around quite a bit, long drifts casting different colours is the way to explore our inshore grounds. As soon as you get some action work in that area until things go quiet then move on. You can explore any broken bottom from the back of the beach out to the five-fathom bank. Over time you will find areas that produce more often than others, these become your starting points for the next trip. If you’re not sure of the colour white, white and white it becomes one of those colours that work in a variety of conditions.

King George and sand whiting, the edges of the sand and weed is your place to start and with the cleaner water you can get a good visual on the bottom. Expect a few wrasse and butter fish to be amongst them but if you persist in the right areas, you should have success. If you find an area you’re liking a good handful of berley pellets drifting to the bottom can often help bring on a bite. Expect a few good silver trevally or skippy to show up once a bit of berley is deployed.

Up our rivers we are seeing good numbers of juvenile mulloway up to 60cm, great fun on light tackle and plastics. There are also a handful of tasty crabs in our estuary. Take a flick rod with you as there are good numbers of herring and tailor in our estuary to keep everyone busy.

We are heading away from our full moon so we will expect to see crays moving again and filling pots.

If you are looking for some line burning fun, we are seeing big sambos in the shallows following the schools of sea mullet around. If you can tempt one with a bait or lure deploy a live bait with a circle hook it works every time.

Wherever you get the chance this week as always good luck, tight lines and remember every day’s a good day for fishing.
