Angler holding fresh caught Blue Fin Tuna for sashimi preparation

Toni with a nice little Blue Fin, Fresh Sashimi

Welcome to this week’s edition of Tight Lines.

A change in seasons has lined up with a change in conditions. Beaches, if four wheel driving please take care as conditions could well be completely different than last Saturday prior to the big storm surge and swell that battered the coast Sunday and Monday. What’s left of the beach could well have surprise wash outs, exposed limestone rock bars and seaweed mounds. Last week’s prime gutter may or may not be there. The weather for Thursday, Friday and Saturday looks fantastic and the fish will still be there. You may have to explore a little more to find a fishy looking area. If it’s weeded up keep searching for cleaner areas as persistent weed is challenging to any angler having a successful day out.

Conditions should still be conducive to Pink Snapper and Mulloway with some nice mulloway caught last weekend in the storm build up. For the boaties conditions have settled down well, with nice sized KGs, Skippy and Sampson fish all active before the blow.

If you have your cray pots in the water, it’s a good time to go a little deeper and onto some flatter bottom, all this will help to prevent pot losses from the winter storms. As far as having to get out there to retrieve your pots do it within the calm weather windows between cold fronts. The crays themselves don’t mind being in your pots at all as your pots provide food and shelter, all they really need to be happy. Rivers and estuaries will still be okay with relatively good water. The river should have some heightened activity with a small amount of water trickling in stirring things up a bit. Freshwater could also start to be more active with the smaller streams trickling a bit of water helping to activate the trout into a more active mode.

Keep an eye on our prawns as well with the freshwater that hit the system last weekend and a waning moon. Both good signs of some better prawn activity.

Wherever you get the chance this week as always good luck, tight lines and remember every day’s a good day for fishing.
