Angler Lochy holding a chunky winter Bluefin Tuna caught off Mandurah

Weekly Winner | Chunky winter Blue fin for Lochy

Welcome to this week’s edition of Tight Lines!

New moon phase this Friday evening, the darkest moon phase with strong tidal movement is what it equates to. It is often associated with a stronger bite from predators: Tailor, Mulloway and land-based Pink Snapper. If you have the chance and the weather stars align, it’s well worth casting or flying out a bait or two. High tides are mid-morning, so a nice sunrise till noon session may yield some great daytime predators. Offshore, the bite will generally coincide with the stronger tides as well, whether it’s for the Bluefin Tuna that are in great numbers on the troll, or on the anchor and burley for King George, Skippy and Samson Fish. A few of the key indicators are suggesting the bite will be between 8 and 11am.

Offshore has been nice and consistent recently, with those pulling their cray pots getting a good feed of fish on the way in or out. Land based, great Tailor recently — the strong tide could see a nice morning bite on offer. They often go quiet once the sun gets up a bit, hence an early start for the bigger fish. Our estuary system and the sheltered waterways are already starting to clean up post the winter rainfall. Extra low tides have also helped to drain the fresh off the top earlier than most seasons, meaning the smaller bait will be entering the season in bigger numbers before we know it. That means Squid, Skippy and Tailor aren’t far from building in good numbers. It also means our shallow water flats fishing is just around the corner. Yellowfin Whiting is the one species we are all keen to start casting for.

Wherever you get the chance this week as always good luck, tight lines and remember every day’s a good day for fishing.
