Welcome To This Week’s Edition of Tight Lines
There’s fishing options a plenty coming up this week and finally we have a string of warm sunny days forecast for the coming week giving us all an opportunity to get out and scratch that fishing itch.
Firstly, September has always been known as an amazing time to get your cray pots in the water. The crays are generally plentiful and eager for a feed coming off the back of winter’s rough weather. Many would consider them in the best condition too, tasting better and being fuller than other parts of the year.
Saturday’s Trout fest down at Drakes Brook Weir marks the start of WA’s Trout stocking program where thousands of fish from small fry through to large brood stock are released into our inshore rivers and dams. Exploring all waterways from the Murray River in Dwellingup right down to the Harvey Dam and beyond, there will be fresh stocks for recreational anglers to enjoy for another year.
Our estuary system has well and truly had a big flush this winter, watch as this week’s tides start to introduce some cleaner water to the estuary amidst the coffee coloured run off. Looking for areas where that clean water is holding up will be the key to finding big numbers of hungry light tackle sportsfish such as skippy, juvenile salmon, tailor, herring and whiting.
Probably the greatest news for the boaties is that our demersal season opens this Monday the 16th and our prize species such as Dhufish, Snapper, Baldchin Grouper and Breaksea Cod will be back on the menu. The season is open for four weeks total after a decision was made to extend it a week extra either side of the September school holidays.
Finally there’s still plenty of pelagic action just offshore too with Samson fish of all sizes keeping drag washers warm for many anglers.
The 30-40m zone also holds plenty of Tuna for some fun on the troll and makes for an amazing feed either fresh or fried. Wherever you get the chance to wet a line this weekend as always, good luck tight lines, and remember every day’s a good day for fishing.
