Tight Lines – 13 February, 2025
February 13, 2025

Welcome To This Week’s Edition Of Tight Lines

This Saturday the 15th of February marks the 4th and last 1 hour Roe Abalone session for the 24/25 summer. Take care on the shallow shoreline reef systems, it’s good to work in pairs with someone keeping one eye on the waves and one eye on you.

Offshore, February is Pelagic month with the annual PGFC Marlin cup being held this weekend with 41 boats entered. The water out at the Rottnest trench looks positive good luck to the fleet.

If you are not participating in the comp, it’s still the best time of year to try for an elusive Mandurah Mackerel, Dolphin fish, Southern Blue, Long tail or Yellow tail Tuna. They can be found from the back of our five fathom bank all the way out to the shelf. A mix of deeper divers and skirts is a good way to look up apps like Rip charts to get an idea of things like sea surface temperature, Chlorophyll, Current direction and strength.

Inshore anchor and berley is still in play for things like Skippy and Yellow Tail Kings.

You can also expect a good feed of sand whiting in the 8-10 metre holes inside the five-fathom bank.

Inshore, Squid are also in play, any of the limestone reef systems that we have hugging our coastline can hold squid. We like to shuffle along the coast slipping a handful of casts at any of the weed covered limestone. If you get a couple, throw in another handful of casts before moving along to the next piece of structure.

The Summer morning easterly winds and low swell is ideal for this type of fishing.

Our Estuary is still producing solid Skippy, Tailor, Whiting, Juvenile Salmon and Herring, add to this a feed of crabs and well life’s pretty good.
