Seth taming the local winter Sambos
Welcome to this week’s edition of Tight Lines!
After a genuine winter week of weather with solid rain earlier in the week and clear, cool days towards the end of the week, what are our options? Let’s start with the freshwater scene. Our winter has been a bit drier than average, meaning the small streams that feed our dams haven’t been flowing consistently. Rain from the start of the week will hopefully get things moving and with the forecast of more next Monday, our trout activity should be getting better. Not long now till spring and as soon as the bugs break, our dams will only get better.
The wind is down for the next few days giving the saltwater anglers a bit of a window, keeping an eye on the swell especially in shallow water. This time of year, venturing a little deeper when the consistent winter swells are about can also be more productive with the fishing as well as safer. Winter Skippy and Samson fish have been in good numbers from the beaches out to the 30m structure. The Sambos have been big with some nearly unstoppable on fresh squid or fast-paced jigs that go for some serious winter fun.

Plenty of Bluefin tuna still about as well. We don’t have the diving terns etc. this time of year, but the good old Mutton Birds can help give away the location of the tuna as they bring up bait from the depths below. Even if the Mutton Birds are sitting on the water, these are the areas to troll closely, as the Mutton Birds are often sitting on top of the feeding tuna below, waiting for the action to get close enough for them to access feed as well. As the swell subsides Friday, the conditions should be spot on for land-based Pink Snapper with dirty water and land-based winds.
Wherever you get the chance this week as always good luck, tight lines and remember every day’s a good day for fishing.
