Tight Lines – 14th May

Angler holding large dhufish caught from shore fishing in Mandurah

Weekly Winner | Kade with and epic Land Based Dhu

Welcome to this week’s edition of Tight Lines.

A little bit of a change from the calm autumn conditions we have been enjoying over the past few weeks, with a small cold front, a small amount of rain and some swell. Add to this the new moon this Sunday and I’m expecting heightened fish activity over the next week or so. While we are waiting for the swell to fall, the rivers, estuaries and marinas will be the places to go.

Our estuary has good numbers of herring, big autumn herring that love topwater lures. The tailor will be up and about with the extra water movement; there are also still a few crabs on offer. The Dawesville Cut itself is holding good herring and tailor, the morning incoming tide the better time of the day. Great conditions for crays in pots, the little bit of swell over a few days and the dark side of the moon is perfect, get them in the water for a week or two for a nice feed before the winter swells hit hard.

Whilst out on our inshore reefs the skippy have been up and about, a little bit of burley will find them every time. Beaches and ocean rock walls, this is where we should see some exciting fishing over the next week or so. The swell we are experiencing is giving our inshore and beaches a good stir up. This is what predators like snapper, mulloway and tailor look forward to, hunting under dirty water. Combine this with the new moon and big mid-morning tides. It’s going to be great for droning and those that are on the cast. We could also see a pulse of salmon back on our beaches, with the recent nice weather they have been sitting offshore. A pulse in the swell will often bring them back to within casting distance. All in all, if you have the chance to get out there the back half of this weekend, it could be well worth it.

Wherever you get the chance to wet a line, as always good luck, tight lines and remember every day’s a good day for fishing.
