Welcome to another week of tight lines!

A mix of weather as we head deeper into spring, but we are slowly seeing the transition into the summer fishery. Afternoon tides are pretty strong in our part of the world for this time of year, which can lead to a nice active bite late afternoon and early evening, especially for species like Tailor, Squid and Mulloway. We are also seeing a few schools of Whiting starting to group up along the beaches. They can be more active just after dawn and on the high tide. The Vexed micro meats are one of the most effective rigs I have used for them. Add a fresh piece of prawn or squid and it’s hard for the Whiting to resist them.

The Yellowfin in our estuary are around; they are being tempted with vibes and/or the same Vexed micro meat this time of year. Just add a bit more sunshine and it will be on for surface lures. I did also see the first inshore Spanish Mackerel for the season in metro waters during the week, a smaller fish but it’s a good sign for the season ahead. The Bluefin is still firing offshore just along the outer edge of the five fathoms and has produced lots of fish recently. Bream and juvenile Mulloway are still good in our rivers; the overcast weather with a bit of breeze around is keeping them active. Great time for freshwater as well, with the recent restocking and milder weather keeping a bit of water flow, combined with cooler conditions keeping the freshwater scene active.

Crays are still firing on the reef for reds; they should keep active till the build to the next full moon. We wait till after the next full moon to see if they will go quiet before moulting or stay active for another few weeks.

Wherever you get the chance this week as always good luck, tight lines and remember every day’s a good day for fishing.
