Angler Louie holding a Bluefin Tuna caught in shallow water during winter off Mandurah

Weekly Winner | Louie with a solid Blue Fion Tuna from the Shallows.

Welcome to this week’s edition of Tight Lines!

We definitely have some clear, cool, crisp mornings, with the winter weather pattern looking to pan out with some nice-sized weather windows. A lot better than some years where the cold fronts are relentless and we just can’t catch a break. Offshore first, because there are still some good pelagics around. We can often get caught with the assumption that pelagic species such as Bluefin and Spanish Mackerel pack up and leave at the end of summer. Over the years I’ve seen and caught some of the biggest Bluefin for the season in the winter months.

Our friends in the sky, the birds that help us locate schools, have all but migrated to other places, so it’s about using your knowledge on the water and looking for other signs. It’s not uncommon to see free-jumping tuna on the calm winter days. Once I see them, I will simply drive directly in that direction, keeping an eager eye out for any other signs of fish under the water. Our sounders are also handy. We are looking for bait schools; we generally find these schools hanging out in depth zones based on temperature, currents and food. If I’m driving out to sea and I see a few solid signs, I will generally turn north-south, driving up and down the coast to see if I can hone in on more activity.

Shallow water Sambos go as hard as any fish in the Water

Lures we tend to lean more toward diving lures or skirts that sit under the water this time of year — Halco Laser Pros and Max 130s, or Richter Silver Tornados and KYKYs. Nearshore we have good numbers of Skippy and KGs. Through the 27 to 34-metre line we have good KGs with a mix of smaller tasty sharks. Remember, shark is now in its own bag limit of three per angler; they have now been removed from the pelagic list.

Our rivers have some nice bream action, with some solid fish over the 35cm mark. Our beaches have good tailor and nice pink snapper.
