Weekly Winner | Aiden having a blast with the inshore Blue Fin

Welcome to another week of tight lines!

A bump in the swell is going to keep the water dirty and given we are also in a waning moon phase, red crays are going to be super active over the next few weeks. The dirty water will also provide good conditions for land-based snapper. Offshore we continue to see solid numbers of bluefin tuna with some solid fish amongst them. We have also seen a couple of bonito mixed in with them over the past week. Skippy and Samson fish are super active from the five fathom and out through the thirties. We have also seen a few larger flathead caught by people fishing the sand seams and broken ground for whiting; they are always a welcome sight as the larger ones aren’t always easy to find in our fishery. Bream and mulloway are active up our river; the mulloway especially have been nice and consistent this season.

This Saturday the 3rd is the launch of our trout season with the annual Trout Fest event at Drakesbrook Weir. Running from 9am till 1pm, it’s the place to be for tips and demonstrations on freshwater fishing, food stalls, and of course the fun part for the families is that you can help with the release of thousands of juvenile trout into the weir. The southwest freshwater fishery is supported by stock bred in the Pemberton hatchery; the release of fingerlings into the various waterways is a vital part of the viability of the freshwater activity in the southwest. More details of Trout Fest are available on the Shire of Waroona webpages.
