Welcome To This Week’s Edition of Tight Lines
What a week of fishing it’s been up and down our metro coast with mint water conditions and great weather allowing anglers to capitalise on what these summer currents can deliver to our shores. From world record breaking Cobia being caught by Jazz Charters to the Marlin Cup event held over the weekend spawning great numbers of billfish hooked and tagged from the trench and through to Spanish Mackerel making a welcome visit to the reefs south of Dawesville. It’s all happening!
Firstly, to the most exciting of fishing options in our local waters, Spanish mackerel! The recent sightings from divers have turned into a real hunt for these speedsters and now they’re frequently being caught by either spear or line as more and more anglers go out in search. Just check out Kade’s awesome 12+kg model he got on Wednesday on a trolled Garfish bait alongside another he managed on a Halco diving lure.
Tuna species of all kinds are also on the cards for those trolling lures, just like Buzz’s Striped Tuna. Southern Blues are out in numbers from behind the 5 Fathom bank and beyond with lots of bait holding behind the reef and Dolphin Fish continue to hold on our Mandurah and Rockingham fads.
Closer to shore, Squid can be found anywhere from our nearshore weed patches to just inside the Dawesville Cut along the shallow weed banks and into the canal systems.
The estuary crabbing has continued to be the best we have seen in years with both netters and those scooping managing an easy feed of tasty Peel Blue Mannas.
Whilst on the estuary, those throwing light lures are finding some bigger than average Yellowfin Whiting while Silver Trevally have been showing up more frequently to burn line from the light tackle angler’s spool.
And finally, for those who like to harvest our estuary prawns for either bait or the table, this week’s run of prawns has been amazing with the outgoing tide commencing just after dark and the back of a full moon making conditions ideal for dabbers from the shallows, jetties and rock walls.
Wherever you get the chance to wet a line this weekend as always, good luck tight lines, and remember every day’s a good day for fishing.
