Weekly Winner Cooper with his epic Tuna catch!

The winter Skippy fishing has been fantastic! For the best success, try to tick as many of these boxes as possible.

  • Anchor close to the edge of some structure, preferably off a nice sand edge. Keep it nice and shallow, around 12 meters or less.
  • Use a good berley bag full of tasty goodness. This can include berley logs, old pilchards, berley pellets, and old cray and crab shells.
  • Tie the bag off at the transom and give it a shake regularly to keep the trail running.
  • Use light rods (2-4 kg, approximately 7ft) with 10lb line and very lightly weighted baits. The vexed micro meats with either the twin hook set or the Mutu hook work well. A 5-gram weight is all you need.
  • Skippy love to pounce on baits, jigs, or plastics that are floating down—not rapidly falling to the bottom. A fresh slice of squid on your micro meat will do the trick.
  • Keep your drag relatively light, as Skippy have a soft mouth. Keeping it light will help prevent pulling hooks.

Once they turn up in your berley trail, it can be a hot bite. Once landed, quickly brain spike and nick the gills, then bleed them. Place them straight into a saltwater ice slurry to keep them firm and fresh.

Skippy are great cooked but are also excellent as sashimi with soy, ginger, or wasabi, or ceviche-style with chili, ginger, olive oil, salt, pepper, and a squeeze of lemon or lime to cure them in just a few minutes.

On your way out and back to your Skippy spot, it can pay to tow a lure or two. Cooper picked up an early-season Skipjack or striped Tuna just last weekend. Small skirts like Richter Hockz Heads are easy to tow between 6 and 9 knots. A mix of dark and bright colors in your spread will give you the best chance under all light and water conditions.
