Weekly Winner | Francis with a 95cm Pink Snapper from the sand great fish
Welcome to this week’s edition of Tight Lines!
Winter options are growing with some great opportunities. Offshore, first using an app like Rip Charts, we are seeing a nice distinct temperature break in the 40 to 45 metre mark. This is the area to set lures in search of winter Bluefin Tuna. Start with hard bodies then add some skirts once you find areas holding fish. Offshore we are also seeing the local Samson fish starting to school up on lumps. Ocean’s Legacy knife jigs combined with fast-pitch jigging techniques will get them in the mood for some adrenaline-packed sessions. The same structure is also offering large winter Skipjack; they will happily grab jigs and plastics meant for the larger Samson fish when they are in the mood.
Austin with a Blue fin on the jig. Not uncommon in the winter months.
Move slightly off the larger structure to the broken ground and we are seeing good King George Whiting, plus anglers are collecting some nice small sharks in Gummy and Whiskery. Nearshore there are also some nice sand whiting being caught in the sand holes inside the five-fathom bank. Given that this winter we are seeing some nice calm days between the cold fronts, it’s giving the opportunity to put some cray pots in the water. Keep them on some flatter hard bottom and there are plenty of good reds on offer.
We are still seeing Tailor and Pink Snapper as we head into sunset for the early evening bite time. Rock walls and groins are doing okay; they will often fish a little better this time of year on the outgoing tides in the afternoons for the staples of Herring and Tailor. There are a few winter Salmon getting about as well to spice things up a bit. Rivers are productive as well with Bream and juvenile Mulloway, and if you are looking to head into the hills there have been some nice trout caught over the past few weeks.
Wherever you get the chance this week as always good luck, tight lines and remember every day’s a good day for fishing.
