Angler Hayden holding a snapper caught at Mandurah after over a year of trying

Weekly Winner | Hayden with his snapper. He has been trying for over a year finally with some success

Welcome to this week’s edition of Tight Lines!

The fantastic winter weather windows have been a feature of the past week, especially giving the boaties a chance to get offshore. The 28 to 34 metre area has kept anglers smiling with a variety of species, from good-sized King George to small sharks — Whiskery, Gummy and Bronze Whaler. Small sharks are fantastic on the plate; it all begins with dispatch right from the moment they come over the side. First up, a quick tap on the nose with a small bat to literally put them to sleep. Then I spin them around and cut through just in front of the tail fin at the thinnest part of the tail. Cut through the backbone and break the cartilage by bending the tail fin around and laying it alongside the trunk of the shark. You will immediately notice the blood flowing — stick the trunk of the shark against or out of your deck scupper to save mess. A small shark can take several minutes to bleed out completely. Then a quick wash with the deck hose before we trunk the shark by taking off the fins and tail, gutting and heading the shark. I then keep them in a separate bag to my fin fish. Remember they are now no longer part of the pelagic bag limit, meaning you can keep 3 per angler. We have had a nice mix of better-sized Bluefin Tuna about in the 30 to 40 metre area, with divers working better this time of year.

Plenty of winter skippy available for those on anchor adjacent to some nice structure.

Our beaches have had tailor, herring and snapper, with most snapper this week caught after sunset with the cleaner water and calm conditions. Our estuary has had a nice tailor and a handful of herring. Our Murray River has had some nice black bream with plenty over 35cm.

Wherever you get the chance this week as always good luck, tight lines and remember every day’s a good day for fishing.
