Grabbing the somewhat smaller weather windows is what’s making the difference at the moment.

The offshore pelagics are certainly out there, so for those who are keen, it’s just putting in the time on the water. There have been good signs for the Dollie’s even though the current flow is light and way offshore there are still some big fish getting around.

Inshore there are still good numbers of squid to be caught. Literally any darker or broken bottom is worth a few casts as you drift along. It’s a great time of year right now to have a floater out the back as well because the elusive Shark or Spanish Mac can turn up unannounced, and leave just as quick! Your only chance may be the simple mulie on a gang already out the back.

Late Feb, early March is always a good time for crabs, and this year is no different, with good numbers and generally fuller, tastier crabs coming over the sides.

This weekend’s stormy forecast will limit us to the sheltered rock walls and groins. So as long as you’re not getting too wet, there is still the chance of a good sunset bite.

The full moon is forecast for Tuesday, making it the best time of the month for squid and tailor.

Then depending how stirred the water gets, we may see a pink snapper opportunity from the shore Sunday and Monday.

The small amount of fresh water can at times make our local prawns more active as well, so it could well be worth checking the batteries in the head torch and going for a look.
