Winter conditions continue to bring challenges, especially with fresh run-off flooding into the estuary, but there are still a few solid options if you’re looking to wet a line. This week’s Mandurah fishing report gives you a full breakdown of what’s biting where.

Sand whiting are active on the inside of the Five Fathom Bank, particularly around broken weed wedges. King George whiting are also in good numbers from the 18 to 24 metre range and further out between 28 to 34 metres.

The same 28 to 34 metre depth range is producing good numbers of tuna, both bluefin and striped. If you see any signs of fish at all, it’s worth trolling the depth line with small resin head skirts from Buku or Richter. Bird activity is light this time of year, so don’t wait for a surface show.

Skippy and Samson fish are moving across the inshore banks out to 30 metres. Set up a light burley trail and you could be in for a solid winter session.

It’s time to dust off the cray pots. Red crays up on the reef are full and getting ready to move with the swell and dirtier water. As soon as conditions allow, it’s worth getting out and setting your gear.

Weed remains the biggest hurdle. Recent winter fronts have pushed a lot into the shallows, but conditions can change quickly. A large high-pressure system setting up in the Bight should help improve beach access.

The estuary is still holding a handful of whiting and the odd winter juvenile salmon, offering a fun light tackle option if you’re fishing the flats or drop-offs.

Despite winter challenges, there’s still plenty of action to be found with the right planning. Watch the weather, time your tides and stay flexible. Tight lines.
