Angler holding 38cm squid caught in Peel region waters

Weekly Winner | Logan locking away a 38cm tube local squid

Welcome to this week’s edition of Tight Lines.

Big changes in conditions will provide a whole range of different options. The weather will be quite good Friday and Saturday.

As I write up this column, the swell is there but not out of control, currently 2 metres off Mandurah and Rottnest. This Sunday is also the Full Moon, combine this with the low pressure from the approaching weather system, we will see higher than average tides that are also aligning with sunrise. All this together could see a strong bite from our Tailor, Mulloway and Snapper all the way through to the cold fronts expected arrival Sunday. Our protected waterways will also be active with extra water over our flats in the estuary providing lots of water movement. Lots of movement can equal heightened fish activity, you may find yourself exploring areas that are normally too shallow to fish. Sandbars and pinch points that have water actively moving over them are the places to explore. Low air pressure and a full moon phase will have the Tailor and Herring up and active. The Dawesville cut itself has had big numbers of Autumn herring and a handful of good sized squid.

Offshore may not be in the picture this weekend, those that got out there over the past week managed XL King George and some smaller Sambos on jigs. Pelagic wise there have also been some Blue Fin Tuna caught for those who have put some time in trolling. This time of year bibbed lures are important in the mix with your skirts, they can provide the extra action and rattle to get the fish up. 30 to 40 metres has been the area producing.
