Plenty is starting to happen in the world of fishing throughout the Peel region.

First up, for some school holiday fun up in the hills, TroutFest at Drakesbrook Weir is on this weekend, Saturday the 4th of October, with a 9am start. As a bonus, you can try trout fishing this school holidays from the 4th through till the 12th of October without the need for a freshwater licence.

With insects and bugs starting to hatch, we have seen trout and redfin activity on the rise over the last 10 days or so.

Our land-based snapper fishing has been super active over the past week, with Luke landing a 97cm beauty. A well-earned reward for the effort he’s put into his quest for solid land-based fish.

We’ve also seen the first signs of yellowfin whiting on the flats in the estuary. A few more weeks will allow more freshwater to exit the system, and we’ll hopefully see them start to fire up for the season ahead.

As we head into the full moon next Tuesday, tailor on our beaches should be more active. With a low-pressure system forecast this weekend, the pre-rain bite could be good for local tailor.

The bigger tides of the full moon will also hopefully push a little more seawater into the entrances of our estuary system, bringing bait along for the ride.

Keep an eye on the swell if you’re heading offshore, as it’s holding above 2 metres for most of the weekend.
