Welcome to this week’s edition of Tight Lines
Some warmth in the sun over the past few days finally getting some heat on the water and firing up our Estuary fishing.
Clearer water and more bait, it’s that simple, more bait in our Estuary system equates to more Herring, Tailor, juvenile, Salmon and active whiting.

Tailor and juvenile Salmon on the slow troll along the edges of the deep to shallow, once you locate a school a few casts with surface lures will ensure an exciting session of light tackle sports fishing. When we talk about light tackle its 1-4 kg rods, 6-8lb braid, 8-10lb leader and floating surface lures. Surface strikes of fish 40-50cm on light gear is what our Estuary is all about.
Everyone is asking about crays when will the whites run?
The signs this past 7 days or so is the reds are starting to go into their moult phase, its approximately a 3–4-week cycle for them to moult, and shells harden so they are ready for their migration out into deeper waters, with what’s more commonly known as the run of the whites.
YF whiting on our flats getting more and more active
Offshore there are good KGs in 22 to 34mtrs, plenty of arm bending Sampson fish and Skippy to test you tackle. Then drop a spread of lures in for a nice fresh feed of Blue Fin Tuna.
Freshwater we have seen some bigger Redfin over the past week or two up to the good old fashion 5 pound mark.
