Weekly Winner | Beautiful winter kg’s and beautiful winter sunshine
Welcome to this week’s edition of Tight Lines!
Offshore, some nice winter KG have been caught on the calm days between the cold fronts. Two main areas to try are off the back of the 5 fathom bank from 18 to 24 metres and through the broken bottom from 28 to 34 metres. On your sounder we are looking to work away from hard structure through to the broken weedy bottom. Fresh bait will also help if you come across it. We often see squid through the same type of bottom that we work for the KG whiting. Keeping a squid jig close by in the gunnel of the boat, even set up on a simple handline, will help you make the most of an opportunity.
The opportunities arise when you are bringing up a fish. Even from 30 metres, the squid will follow closely or even be hanging onto species like wrasse and KG whiting. Slip the squid jig over the side as you bring the fish out of the water to give them another option to switch their attention to, and you get the chance to kill two birds with one stone: some fresh tentacles for bait and some squid rings for dinner as an entree to your KG whiting. The other tip for all whiting is to rig strip baits, long skinny strips rigged up on red long-shank style hooks. The red colour adds a bit of spice as whiting tends to be more attracted to all things red. Red beads or red tubes can also help with more hook-ups.

It’s looking like a bit of rain this Friday and Saturday, so it’s a great time to take a few metres of braid off your reels and tie on fresh leaders. Maybe even make up a few rigs ready for the next calm period of weather. If you need to get your fix on the water, there has been some nice juvenile mulloway and bream up our rivers, which will be sheltered from the onshore winds forecast for the next few days.
