Angler Ryan holding a Bluefin Tuna caught on the cast in Mandurah waters

Weekly Winner | Ryan nailing Tuna on the Cast

Welcome to this week’s edition of Tight Lines!

New Moon weekend and a bit of a cold front will bring on great conditions for land-based Snapper this weekend. Dirty water, strong tides and the dark side of the moon. Setting up on the rock walls and groins with fresh baits of Herring or Mullet will give you a great chance. Circle hooks are the go on the rocky groins to minimise snagging up and make solid hook-ups, minimising dropped fish while trying to net them in the surge. For the drones, the wind looks to drop Sunday and Monday, giving a window to fly some baits out. The rivers are providing some good options now, with good numbers of juvenile Mulloway and some nice-sized Bream. Bait Junkie plastics are always successful.

The Bluefin Tuna continue their epic winter run with small divers and skirts on the troll. The Halco Laser Pro 140 in Pink Chrome and the Richter Hockzhead in Chartreuse are absolute crackers. On the cast, the Oceans Legacy Sling Shot or the Jackson Muscle Shot both cast well and get eaten when they land. Crays will be good till the next full moon. We will watch with anticipation then, and if they go quiet pre-moult, we will watch for the whites run. For now, stay on the reef for a good feed.

Out in the 30s, a nice drift will see you in with a chance for some local King George. Freshest of bait is one of those things that will help. If you do get a fresh squid, drop the tentacles straight on and send them back down on a nice sharp hook.
