Weekly Winner | Sophie with a Dollie on spear
Welcome to this week’s edition of Tight Lines
We love Autumn and at times testing summer winds have gone and we have an awesome period of calmer seas until winter kicks in. Get out there and enjoy.
Salmon to our south, this year’s Salmon build up started slow and a few weeks ago I didn’t have a lot of hope that there were enough numbers to push up to local waters. However, the last 7 days or so we have seen a solid build up in numbers around the Capes with consistent solid schools turning up. I’m now optimistic that we could have some of these awesome fish turn up on our doorstep in reasonable numbers at any time. A mulie or fresh herring fillet on a simple paternoster rig is the go if you can’t see any schools of fish. Once they are around in any numbers, they will happily chase down metals and stick baits.
Mulloway are also doing their Autumn surge with better numbers of better sized fish. They are one of those species that can take a lot of effort for reward with several nights on the beach without any success. Why not put the odds in your favour and soak some fresh tailor fillets while they are around.
The larger Autumn Herring are also around with good numbers through the entrances, rock walls and groins. Keep an eye out for squid as we have noticed some larger calamari coming through over the past 7 days as well. Once the tidal flow slows a bit it’s a good time to flick a squid around especially if it coincides with sunrise or sunset.
Autumn Herring are building up
Flounder are more common than ever Blaze with cracker
It was a day to remember for Zane and Sophie
Offshore we have seen an increase in pelagic activity since the rain and storms a few weeks back. With good Mackerel being caught north and south of Rotto.
With some cracking Shark Mackerel being caught in local waters.
Mason with his first Jumbo cray great work
Taj with a cracking local Squid
If the Estuary is your scene there are still Crabs, Herring, Whiting, Tailor and a few squid on offer.
Wherever you get the chance this week as always good luck, tight lines and remember every day’s a good day for fishing.
