Winter is well and truly here, and fishing opportunities are all about grabbing weather windows and conditions that suit the species we are targeting. Since these windows are generally smaller than in other seasons, use the wet and windy days for preparation. Tie on a fresh leader, make up some rigs and store them labelled ready to go. Even give your reel a once-over so that when you’re out on the cast, everything goes to plan.

Jake has done exactly that and was rewarded with an awesome land-based Pink Snapper from the cast. Snapper over 800mm are impressive at any time, but even more so when landed from the shore. Classic Mandurah fishing.

Inshore Dhufish are also active at this time of year. The stirred-up water can spark some extra feeding behaviour, and a well-presented, lightly weighted or unweighted bait can do the trick in less than 15 metres of water.

Black Bream are always a solid option when the ocean is too rough to fish offshore. Check out Benny’s bream, caught using a simple unweighted prawn, mullet strip or mulie cube cast toward structure. These fish require a stealthy approach. Leave slack in your line to let them pick up the bait and run before they commit. From there, it’s all about stopping them before they get back to their snag.

The weekend weather is looking good, with plenty of fishing options opening up. Whether you’re on the beach, rock walls, groynes, or heading out by boat inshore or offshore, it’s a great time to mix up your catch and see how many different Mandurah species you can land.
