Weekly Winner | Aaron with some sunset Sambo line burning action from the sand

Welcome to this week’s edition of Tight Lines!

Welcome back to the weekly fish reports. I was off the grid the last two weeks getting amongst some great fish from the north of our state.

Back to our local fishery. Offshore there are still good numbers of local Bluefin Tuna and given we are seeing some nice breaks in the weather between cold fronts, we are getting some nice windows for the boaties. I recommend divers as the primary approach, Halco Laser Pros in gold or dark-based colours given the winter water clarity. To mix it up a bit, have someone sitting with a casting rod ready to go, rigged with a compact casting lure like the Jackson Muscle Shot. As soon as a trolling rod goes off, send the cast out the back for the chance at a double hook-up. It takes some teamwork from those on the boat but is very rewarding when it comes off.

Offshore we are also seeing some nice KG Whiting catches, and good size and numbers of Sand Whiting as well. The big winter Sambos have been patrolling the inshore beaches, rock walls and groins. They are following in and feeding on the schools of Sea Mullet. They can be known as the GT of the south as they are seriously strong. When fired up they can be tempted via stickbaits and poppers. If they are proving hard to tempt this way, fresh squid or a live bait will be hard for them to resist.

Land-based Snappers are still making anglers smile, and the Herring and Tailor staples can be better away from the freshwater outlets to the sea, especially after rain events.
