Welcome to this week’s edition of Tight Lines!
Winter fishing is hot to trot. Literally pick your windows and there are some good fish being caught. Offshore first up, pelagics, mainly Southern Bluefin Tuna, in strong numbers. Near shore from as shallow as 15m all the way out through the 40s. To the south they have been stronger closer to shore, with anglers having some great trolling and casting sessions. Stay on the troll until you find the fish, then at times their numbers have been so strong anglers have been able to grab the light casting combos down from the rocket launchers and literally drift along with the schools, catching multiple fish before they go quiet. Smaller 20 to 30 gram lures and 5-8kg outfits are more than capable of landing them in shallower water.

We are seeing great skippy in size and numbers along our inshore structure, with micro jigs or lightly weighted baits the go. Mutu style hooks work a treat with skippy as they have soft lips, and to help prevent pulling hooks the Mutu style will generally pin the fish deeper into the corner of the mouth, resulting in more landed fish.

Be prepared for the XL Samson fish that can inevitably turn up in your burley trail this time of year. At times when landing XL size Sambos in shallow water, I find you will have more success by going easy on them, letting them run on lighter drags and taking your time leading them in rather than trying to dictate the terms. If you go hard, they will go harder and bury you in seconds.

Our rivers are home to some nice bream and soapie mulloway. And with the better rain this week, the streams up in the hills will hopefully have a little more flow, increasing the activity in our freshwater systems.
Beaches continue to be strong with tailor and snapper.
