Logan holding a haul of large squid caught in Mandurah inshore waters

Logan with some cracking squid

Welcome to this week’s edition of Tight Lines!

Winter is behind us and Spring is here. First up this week, a reminder that our Blue Manna crab season is now closed, reopening on the first of December. We are in a waning moon phase, and the weather next week looks fantastic. It’s cray time, let’s get some reds before they go into their moult phase. The hard bottom is the place to be. I try to avoid hectic structure so if we do get some swell, it minimises the chance of pots getting stuck. We have some nice chunky winter tailor on our beaches and rock walls. The afternoon bite is a little more consistent than the morning. Good fish nudging toward 50cm have been caught recently. Another good sign is larger squid slowly turning up in our shallower water. As the inshore waters start to warm up post-winter, the larger squid start to turn up. Darker squid jigs are the go when the water is a little dirty and the sky is overcast. If the water is cleaner and the sun is out, brighter jigs are the go.

Plenty of bluefin tuna along our inshore reefs, great fun on light gear and excellent eating fresh. It’s worth a bit of a troll when retrieving your cray pots. Samson fish are in crazy numbers, with Buku and Oceans Legacy jigs a bit of a standout. Our rivers have plenty of mulloway which are actively on the chew, plus the stealthier black bream for the more patient angler. All in all, spring has definitely sprung and the fishing options are plentiful.

A big shout out to the dads that actively engage their kids in fishing and the outdoors, you guys rock and a big hi-five to you all. Tight lines and Happy Father’s Day this Sunday.

Wherever you get the chance this week as always good luck, tight lines and remember every day’s a good day for fishing.
